You can find me past the tunneled canopies of
live oaks dripping with Spanish moss.
Through the salt marsh that spills over the pavement
during rainy spells at high tide.
I'm up the double-lane drive, sitting on my porch
whenever the heat and no see ums don't keep me from it.
...in this place where my heart feels most at home.
We were children growing up on salt air and dreams.
We were mermaids crashing against foaming waves.
We were castle dwellers with moats of water disappearing through grains of sand.
We were chefs baking ground coquina shell pancakes, the tide washing our griddles.
We were little girls who knew anything was possible in the worlds we created.
From my earliest memories writing was that whisper of a melody transporting my soul.
Our little band of neighbor girls created a newspaper where "Miss Pen Page" regaled her readership with eccentric lore. Our neighborhood was nestled in the hardwood hammock of Florida, just minutes from the sea. We lived and breathed the outdoors by digging for dinosaur bones, performing open-air plays, camping, and transforming ourselves into pirates, mermaids, pioneers, and detectives.
In my teen years my family moved to the west side of Florida where I was immersed in the rural culture of airboats, rodeos, and the county fair. During this time I threw my teenage angst into poetry and wrote a children's book that my friend illustrated - printed and bound from my upstairs bedroom. While attending a small country church I wrote curriculum for their classes along with writing a rubbish play they kindly still used for their Christmas performance.
I moved to Michigan for college where I graduated with my BA in Communications. Then wanderlust drew me to the Zhejiang province of China where I taught high school conversational English and traversed the beautiful and ancient landscape.
Through those years I met a cute Canadian, we fell in love and began our lives together in Ontario. Our four children fill our lives with endless adventure.
In 2013 I returned to Florida where my family and I have settled out on the salt marsh. The six of us enjoy exploring the wilds of Florida as well as cozy bookstores, cafes, and museums.
In 2010 I began work as a fine art wedding photographer capturing weddings and writing commentary that has graced the pages of bridal magazines and online wedding outlets such as Style Me Pretty.
I am now devoting my attention to that ever-present cadence in my life - writing. I am increasingly lost in the richness of its emotional expression, drama, trills, and cast ensembles.
My heart is in stories of juxtaposition - grace and honesty, beauty and grit, friendship and betrayal. These pieces of our lives that both inspire us and crush us. The symphony of our humanity.
Photography serves as a visual storytelling medium for me. For over a decade I worked as a professional photographer. Some moments are best communicated through imagery.
